For many months I have been writing here on my blog, posting pictures of my work or my garden. As I closed my web page recently, I thought it was better and easier to make a proper blog for my Alba Bears. Of course, there will be posts about my other works as well.

If you liked joining "Bears and Scraps", I would be very glad to welcome you on my new Alba Bears blog too! Thanks for following me and for your lovely comments!

During march I was so busy making again some bears. I was called by a lady who met me when I was selling my Alba Bears and my children's items of my new "Babelina & Button" studio at the Christmas fair last December.

She wanted to buy a teddy bear for her sister. As she wanted something rather small and preferred other colours than pink or red, I first had to make some new creations with the mohairs she chose.

These three fellows were born. It was quite fun, working so intensely on the bears, but it was also a lot of work and very exhausting, as the work could only be done in the <s>late</s> evening... Short nights. Our daughter is too big now, she can reach almost everything on the table, and she wants to be with her mama. And it's difficult enough for me not to lose any of the small parts! And all those pins - definitely not suitable for small hands.

I called the lady, my hopefully soon-to-be customer, to tell her the teddies are ready, that she might come and have a look at them, of course without any obligations to buy one. She told me to call me back - but never did. (I learned another lesson how to run a small business. Or rather: how NOT to run it...)

After having waited for 3 weeks, I put them in my Etsy shop and hope they find a new loving home.

Please note: by the end of April, this blog will be "closed" - I already have a new blog for my Alba Bears, and I would be happy if you could follow me there!
Dear all!

I was busy during these weeks, trying to build up my new business and organising my little studio, which was in a state that used to be, to be honest, a nightmare...
But now things seem to get settled, and I'm busy again making new bears. A client ordered a teddy, and she might even buy another one, which is always very pleasing. Business is not so well presently, I think people still don't like to spend too much money for art or collectibles. But nonetheless I have so many new designs and ideas, and I also would like to make space in my studio, so I started to sale off some of my "older" creations. I think it's time they leave home and find a new place to live. :-) So please have a look at my shop, thanks.

I also will have to make a proper hat for this lovely teddy lady. She is one of my so-called "older" creations, and I set her apart for a client who wanted me to buy her but never called to pick her up. She had a matching felt hat before, but I was not happy with it and the material was not up to my quality standards. So I will have to sit down and make a new one which will certainly turn out better.

One last thing: I will be closing this blog soon. The reason is very simple: I used to have my own homepage for my Alba Bears, but I had nothing but troubles with the provider, and it got more and more complicated. I also was not happy that maintaining the site was so time-consuming. I'd rather spend my time with my family, or making bears, sewing children's clothing, working in the garden. So I decided to close my site. But then, I needed a proper blog, so that my customers can find me easily. And thus I set up a new blog named like my bears, AlbaBears. For a certain time, posts will be published on both blogs at the same time, but if you would like to follow my blog in the future, be sure to go to the NEW blog and follow me there. It was wonderful to have you as a follower here on "Bears & Scraps". There will be scraps of other crafts on my "AlbaBears" blog as well, and I would be deeply honoured and very glad to see you on my new blog soon.

Well, fact is: since Christmas I have been sick more or less all the time. But I also was busy with my second blog.

I am a very crafty person, and I love all things handmade, all kind of crafts. But since I'm a mom, I deeply got into designing and sewing children's clothing and accessories, toys, nice and useful stuff. Suddenly I realised how many things for babies and toddlers didn't meet my expectations at all. I didn't want to buy some of these things I didn't like, just because nothing else was available. So I started to make things of my own. Things made of wood and fabric, be it cotton or wool, natural fibers. I have a sketchbook full of ideas and designs, and I have a fabric stash ready to be used up. OK, the only problem is time. (I still have family duties and lot of housework to do, not to mention a garden...)

My label "Babelina & Button" was born. In December I attended at a local Christmas fair with a lot of my "products", shopping cats covers, wooden hangers, hair clip holders, pacifier bags, girl's dresses, soft toys etc. And even though people here are not so keen on handmade stuff, I could sell some things.

I set up a special blog with a shop for my new "boutique", and I even made my own blog design - the first ever! I am so amazed, my head sometimes is buzzing with all the new ideas that I have, and I wish the day would have more than just 24 hours...

Please understand that my teddies will have to wait a little bit in the meantime. I will not give them up, they are part of my life, but I will try to expand my business and find more buyer, thus being able to contribute to our family's income.

If you are interested in seeing my new blog (even if it's only available in German), you're most welcome, I'd love to see you there!

Why should that be so important you may ask... Well, it is to me, as I made my weeding dress all by my self. I'm not a professional seamstress, and I never had a particular sewing education, so this project was really something special. And it was a lot of work.

The whole thing started when I tried on a wedding dress in a bridal shop. I liked it a lot, but it was not comfortable, and the seller tried to hurry and made a lot of pressure, as it was the last piece. But I needed more time, and I was not really sure about it, so a real odyssey on the search of the perfect dress began. I don't know how many gowns I tried on. And I guess I lost a lot of weight trying them on. In my head I had the picture of my wedding gown, but no dress came close to it. In the end, I was so desperate that I started to search the internet for an older Vogue wedding gown pattern I once saw, probably in the later 90s. Of course, if you don't have a pattern number, it's impossible to find it.
So I bought some of these patterns and thought that each of the designs, without sleeves and with some accessories, would make the perfect wedding gown for me. I soon realised that I would have to make it myself, as there are not so many professional seamstresses here in Switzerland, but I thought it would be possible. I had made some fitting garments for me before, and I was confident to make it in time. My choice was this vintage pattern from about 1956, Butterick 7708. As many other patterns, I bought it on Etsy.

Finding the perfect fabric was sheer luck. There are only two fabric stores left in Zurich, and I was so lucky to find in one of them the most beautiful Duiponi silk in champagne colour. As I knew already from the beginning that I would add some fabric rose accessories, I was lucky again that they had the same fabric in a shade of pink. I felt so happy when I came home with my big bag full of this wonderful silk. I love silk, and I love roses, and therefore I had to have roses on wedding gown!
The I made some kind of test-bodice from a cotton-fabric to make all necessary alterations. I don't tell you how many times I had to alter the pattern (I guess women in the 50s had different body measurements, and I have a rather small bust), how many times I had to change this and that, as I wanted the dress to be sleeve-less and with some boning added to the bodice. You really don't want to know that I had to re-make the bodice again as I made a terrible mistake... At a certain point my DH and me had some sleepless nights as it seemed my sewing-machine didn't work properly, and we were afraid it was broken. I always was afraid to run out of fabric (I still have some left!), and of course, I always was afraid to run out of time. Of course, it's a nightmare for a bride to add such a project to all the other, regular wedding preparations. I had so many sleepless nights, and in those hours in my mind I was always trying to find the perfect solution for the boning, for the under-skirt, for the straps, for the fabric roses etc... I was mentally sewing, even when I was at work in my office. And, in addition to all, we were expecting our child (I was in the 2nd month of my pregnancy at the wedding). This was such a special time, and my husband and I still look back from time to time and lough about it - especially remembering all the many times when he had to assist and close the zipper of the almost finished bodice with his eyes closed...
Of course, I put an lot of work and time and nerves in this dress, but the more the dress advanced, the more I enjoyed it. In the end, making a pompadour and the rose accessories was just like having a delicious desert. The roses were made after a Vogue pattern (Bridal accents V7009), as well as the ring-cushion. The pompadour was made after a pattern from a 90s Burda magazine, and, the day before the wedding, I even had to make a bolero, as the weather was not so good as expected.

I was so proud when I put my dress on on my wedding day, so proud. You can't imagine the feeling, and it made me feel even more special on this special day. And my husbands smile and look when I entered the church - I was so happy, and it was worth all the labour and the fears and the troubles.

Today, when I look back and especially look at my pictures, I don't regret it at all. Of course, some people looked down their noses at my "homemade" wedding gown, the probably thought it was not chic enough or not as posh as this or that designer dress. But I don't care - this is a one-of-a-kind wedding gown, as unique as I wanted to feel on that wonderful day, and nobody ever could take that away from me and from my and my husband's memories. I certainly would make SOME things in a different way, and definitely I would start earlier. But this dress really makes part of our wedding, and I would do it again.
The booklet of our daughter is a little bit worn, even though she's not quite 2 years old.

My idea was to sew a book cover of a nice fabric to protect the booklet. I thought this would be useful for other parents too, as most families have such booklets. So I made some extra covers to sell at my Christmas fair.

This is also a very simple, yet useful idea, perfect as a Christmas present for small or large books, for books you read or look through regularly or for those you carry around with you. I love books and try to take care for them, and I think other people do this as well.

Just measure the book, add the two parts that are folded to the inside of the cover, and add the seam allowance for the part along the top and the bottom edge of the book. The easiest way is to make a pattern or template of paper or thin cardstock.
They're very cute and not too complicated to make - and you can even use the as pincushions!Doris Colanero * Alba Bearshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15787453721218906902noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4659290894712281808.post-67076165439496947612010-12-13T21:13:00.003+01:002010-12-14T12:45:24.085+01:00Pouch for pacifiers and other small things

These are great, as they are easy to make and you have unlimited possibilities to decorate them, and you can easily vary the size.

I used some tea-candle of an average size, this means: the smaller ones (about 1.5 inches), most are even scented and coloured.
The bigger cards contain 3 of them. The smaller cards are not proper cards - they just have one big candle.

When I was shopping, I found some bathing tabs with natural healing essences - almost the same size of the big candles. I had to modify the pattern for the card only slightly.

I printed all the saying myself, as my stamps usually are in English, and I realised that, even though everyone speaks at least a little bit English, people here in Switzerland normally prefer German texts on Christmas cards.

I think these are great small gifts, something that doesn't cost much and are perfect to give someone you just want to say "Merry Christmas" - instead of the same "flat" cards you write each year. And I had so much fun making them - I hope I can sell some of them. Otherwise I have to give them all to my neighbours, to my husand's cousins...
It's not uncommon for my region to have snow in November, but normally, it doesn't last long. This time the temperatures were quite low during the whole weekend, so we still have snow. Doesn't it look nice, the world covered with snow? The picture shows our "medieval herb garden" with a buxus teddy bear topiary and with my beloved roses...
Some. Well, to be honest, I have quite many, but to be honest: can a crafter ever have enough of his favourite material? No. (Wink.) And there are so many cute, beautiful, fantastic designs!
Last saturday, I went to Zurich with my DH and little Alba. There are, however, only two fabric shops left in this whole big city, and both are not what I would call "heaven on earth". I'm demanding, I know.
But look what I found: the cutest colourful owls! First, I only intended to buy the fabric with the bigger print, as I had in mind to make a bib with sleeves for Alba. But my DH insisted that I also took a piece of the smaller print. Isn't he great?

Of course, as fabrics are sooo expensive in Switzerland, is has to bee something very, very nice.
Doris Colanero * Alba Bearshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15787453721218906902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4659290894712281808.post-13488726806139225712010-11-05T16:17:00.004+01:002010-11-05T16:25:52.875+01:00More than 500 visits!

I completely missed that somehow I passed the mark - my blog has been visited more than 500 time so far. This is exciting! I know, compared to other blogs, mine is quite boring, and unfortunately I don't have time to post all the things I do. Of course, I could post them, but then I could work less...

I am preparing stuff for my Christmas fair, but I can work only when my little princess is sleeping. (Today, she was rather a monster - she smeared her dirty hands, full of pasta, tomato sauce and cheese, in her hair. And when I tried to bath her, she cried terribly. Hm, sometimes it's not easy to understand your child.) I was thinking about making one or two more teddies for the fait, but then I changed my mind. Last year, I sold by mere chance only two teddies, and this was disappointing. So I rather make some smaller things that people like to buy for Christmas, mainly useful and lovely things for kids. I will soon post about them.
You are a crafter or an artist, and you make something which is quite all right, but you are not "in love" with your creation. This happened to me with this teddy. I was not completely happy with the finished teddy, although it was a similar and smaller version of teddy I made some time ago and which was adopted by a couple for their newborn grand-daughter as a keepsake.

I wasn't sure about the reason for the missing enthusiasm about my creation. However, I suddenly had the idea that it was not the pattern of the teddy, but the lacking "finishing touch" that caused that feeling. After I already had made another teddy with rose embroideries, I decided that this would just add the special look to this one.
As the teddy's fur was grey, I chose for the embroideries cool colours, teal, icy pale greens. It reminded me so much of white roses after the first frosty nights in late autumn, that I called the finished teddy "Crystal". And guess what - "Crystal" was adopted by the same collector that had already adopted "Memory".

We had lots of rain, and when I look at my garden, I get sad, as we normally have roses blooming until November or the first frost. But now, nature seems to be dead already now...

Unfortunately, due to marriage, pregnancy, house reconstruction, birth and mother duties (more or less in this order, some of them even at the same time...) I didn't have so many possibilities to attend to one of the few teddy fairs we have in Switzerland. One of the last was in a town that is famous for the rose-garden in the castle. And as I love roses so much, I made a special teddy for this event. The piece of mohair has been in my box for quite a long time, and I never knew what to do with it, but for this project it was just perfect.

So my teddy "Memory" was born. The colour reminds me of old roses, and this is also reflected by the embroidered roses on the paws of this creation. They are done in "bouillon embroidery", with very old silk thread I found in my grandmothers sewing box after she died. So this is a very special teddy with lots of memories. I think my grandmother would be pleased to see that the threads were still useful.

"Memory" came home with me after the fair, but later she found a new home. I really hope that she will become part of someone else's memories, as much as she bears within her so many memories of myself.

So enstand "Memory". It was the customers wish, that especially the facial expression of her teddy should be kept the same. But how could this be done? The muzzle was badly damaged and had lost a lot of stuffing, the embroidered nose had traces of older layers of yarns, so I supposed it had been mended over and over again. Of course it's one of the most exposed parts of a teddy.

First I made a "new" muzzle, starting with paper patterns I made after the old muzzle. As with the other damaged parts of the teddy, I used some Schulte mohair, left side up. This time I left the pile, I thought it would kind of "wrap" better around the original part, thus being also better bolster the muzzle and give it a nice shape.

Only after that step I basted the middle part of the nose in place, just to make sure the new muzzle has exactly the same shape as the old one, not too loose, not too tight. This had to be done with extra caution - I didn't want to do more damage to the teddy, and the original fabric and stuffing was very brittle and fragile.
Then I pinned the new muzzle right over the old one in place, and fixed it with ladder stitch.

Finally, I embroidered a new nose with black cotton yarn. The teddy, according to his owner, never seemed to have a mouth, so I just left it that way.
Further I fixed the eyes again, as they were quite loose. The ears needed mending as well, and since there was quite a big hole on the back neck, the head dangled too much and made the hole even bigger. After re-stuffing and closing the hole, the teddy could keep his head upright again - he looked a lot better.

As the whole fabric of this fellow was already very thin, I decided to make some clothes for the teddy. As he obviously was a boy, he got a shirt, checkered trousers and shoes.
I was quite pleased with the result. The teddy looked less tatty, and still he showed the traces of time and the authentic look of an antique and very loved teddy.

Even though it's still autumn, most crafters already prepare for Christmas. So I decided to attend this year at the Christmas Fair in my native town Dielsdorf. Only last year I took part at such an event and I liked it very much. And Dielsdorf is near where I live, and somehow smaller fairs are more attractive than big ones. There are often a lot of handcrafted things to buy. And Dielsdorf is only a 20 minutes train ride away from Zurich.
An interesting detail I'd like to add: the crest of Dielsdorf shows a bear. I think it just had to be that I became a teddy bear artist.Doris Colanero * Alba Bearshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15787453721218906902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4659290894712281808.post-14821579054711339712010-10-16T14:30:00.004+02:002010-10-16T14:41:56.585+02:00Etsy TreasuryA crafter I met through Etsy - she is Swiss but lives now in the USA - put one of my teddies in her treasure chest.

There were several bigger holes on the body and the feet of the teddy. Some of them had to be re-stuffed as well first, in order to maintain the shape especially of the feet.
The huge holes through which the teddy already had lost some stuffing were covered with patches of Schulte mohair fabric. I used only the back of the fabric wrong side up, after having shaven off the mohair pile to make the patches less bulky.

Maybe you noticed the printed cotton fabric paws of the teddy. Originally, the teddy had probably felt paws. The cotton fabric patches were sewn over the original paws many years ago by the owners mother. In the meantime, also these mendings needed mending, as some cats used to chew the teddy's feet. To keep the memory of of a loving mother's cares for her daughter's teddy, I decided to make new cotton fabric patches in a very similar chocolate brown colour, but without printed pattern. I forgot to take some pictures of this step, but you can see them on the final pictures.

Doris Colanero * Alba Bearshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15787453721218906902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4659290894712281808.post-88422683604065500662010-10-14T07:59:00.011+02:002010-10-14T08:33:23.175+02:00Mending an Antique Teddy Bear 1It is one thing to make a teddy bear of your own, but another, completely different one to try to save an antique teddy that is already falling apart...

Teddy (1940) before mending

Some time ago an elderly lady who was born during WWII in Berlin showed me her teddy she got for her birth. As you can see on the pictures, the poor creature had almost no fur left - as a baby the owner tore out the teddy's hair during a bombing, and the years to follow had worked him over as well. She asked me if I could mend it. I wasn't sure about it at all, as I had never done anything similar before, and to be honest, I was afraid of this task. She didn't want me to undo everything and put it together again after cleaning and re-stuffing, but only to restore more or less the face and other damaged parts without changing the whole expression. The project seemed to be even more challenging as have been done already several mendings with patches of different fabrics.

I spent many hours looking at the teddy, thinking about what could be done, I went through all my supplies to find the right material, and finally made a start. I was sooo nervous!
Looking at the pictures still surprises me that I agreed to take this challenge, as I'm a completely self-taught bear maker, and my research about antique teddies didn't give me any ideas how to do it. So I had to find out myself, and by posting it I hope it will help someone else in a similar situation. (I made this work "some" time ago, before I became a mother, as back then I had long nails - it seems like ages ago... *lol)

Damaged armpit with joint

There were huge holes under the armpits from where the stuffing had already vanished, caused by the rubbing of the joints. Another big hole was on the belly.

First I had to find wood wool to re-stuff the arms. To mend the bigger damages I took a piece of Schulte mohair. The back of the fabric had more or less the right colour, the same as the teddy, even though the original fur was that typical brass-yellow many teddies used to have back then. But as I only needed the shaved fabric, wrong side up, the pile was not important. Of course it was not exactly the same colour, as the teddy also had a kind of patina.

With patches of this fabric I covered the major holes. First I basted the patches, the same way as an applique, on the hole before fixing them with an invisible ladder stitch. As it was very difficult to work under the armpit, especially working around the joints, I had to find another solution for the minor damages. With very thin yarn I somehow managed to reconstruct the woven original fabric by "weaving" to and fro many times with yarn and needle until it looked well. I did the same technique on other parts of the teddy.

The first year we lived here, I was very surprised when on Halloween evening two rather shy boys in costumes rang at our door to ask for treats. They had seen our Jack O Lantern. A very important bear... A friend of mine, Corinne - she also was my testimony at my wedding -, is a wonderful doll artist (she makes lots reborn dolls, but also ooak dolls). I just realised that a teddy I once made for her is shown in a picture of one of her works on her website. She needs a lot of baby stuff and things in pastel colours, so this teddy seems to be perfect.

Ein "very important bear"...
I'm so sorry I was absent for so many months. Well, summer was sooooo busy...! We had to re-do our garden. "Garden" was far too flattering for the disaster around the house we bought more than a year ago. With my passion for plants, especially for roses, my DH (dearest husband) gave me almost free hand to buy plants, make plans etc. However, planting a garden means a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. Digging in the dirt, fighting against lots of weeds and parasites, working in the summer heat, mostly on mid-day when the little one is sleeping. My mother-in-law asked me where I, being normally a paleface, got my nice tan from. *lol* (Of course she spent her summer holiday on a sunny beach in Italy.)

I hope to post on my Blog more frequently, as we had so much trouble with the provider of our homepages, that I think about giving them up. I simply don't have so much time anymore to spend hours and hours loading up-dates and calling the support, just to find my site switched off because they "thought" I didn't pay the bill. I got very upset.

Unfortunately, I was not able to do a lot of crafts during the last few months. But now that autumn has finally come, our garden comes to rest. And now it's time to make some more teddies.

Because - I have sold 2 more bears from my Etsy-Shop to the USA! To be precise, I sold 3. A buyer, a quite experienced collector, who had earlier bought a teddy from me, was so pleased that she decided to buy another two creations.

I feel so honoured, as the lovely lady must have quite a lot teddy bears. So three Alba Bears (shown in this post) will be part of her collection! The first picture shows "Ayumi", one of my first Anime teddies. I'm still trying to get the design working, but I think for a self-taught bear maker it's not too bad. The other two creations are traditional, and I'm a little bit nervous if the customer will like them. But then, I always am.

Ha, finally I made a first attempt to make a dragon (which is still in progress) and an Anime bat, as Halloween is coming up. And be sure there will be more new creations! I have so many ideas, I nearly can't sleep at night!

Doris Colanero * Alba Bearshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15787453721218906902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4659290894712281808.post-59998403299026009902010-03-11T07:40:00.011+01:002010-11-18T07:17:12.646+01:00Success! * Freu!

Doris Colanero * Alba Bearshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15787453721218906902noreply@blogger.com0
