New bears (and new blog)

During march I was so busy making again some bears. I was called by a lady who met me when I was selling my Alba Bears and my children's items of my new "Babelina & Button" studio at the Christmas fair last December.

She wanted to buy a teddy bear for her sister. As she wanted something rather small and preferred other colours than pink or red, I first had to make some new creations with the mohairs she chose.

These three fellows were born. It was quite fun, working so intensely on the bears, but it was also a lot of work and very exhausting, as the work could only be done in the late evening... Short nights. Our daughter is too big now, she can reach almost everything on the table, and she wants to be with her mama. And it's difficult enough for me not to lose any of the small parts! And all those pins - definitely not suitable for small hands.

I called the lady, my hopefully soon-to-be customer, to tell her the teddies are ready, that she might come and have a look at them, of course without any obligations to buy one. She told me to call me back - but never did. (I learned another lesson how to run a small business. Or rather: how NOT to run it...)

After having waited for 3 weeks, I put them in my Etsy shop and hope they find a new loving home.

Im März war ich damit beschäftigt, neue Teddys zu machen. Eine Dame hatte mich kontaktiert, die meinen Stand am Weihnachtsmarkt besucht hatte. Für ihr Schwester wollte sie einen eher kleinen Bären, und er durfte nicht in Rot sein. Da ich gerade nichts Passendes hatte, schuf ich drei neue Bären aus Mohairs, die die potentielle Kundin ausgesucht hatte.

Es war sehr schön, wieder einmal so intensiv Bären zu machen, aber auch anstrengend, denn ich musste fast ausschliesslich nachts abends arbeiten, da die vielen kleinen Teile und die gefährlichen Stecknadeln derzeit eine einzige grosse Versuchung für unsere Tochter sind und es zu riskant wäre, weil die Kleine ja stets bei Mutti sein möchte. Zudem ist es schon für mich alleine schwierig genug, keine Einzelteile zu verlieren...

Als die drei fertig waren, rief ich voller Freude meine (hoffentlich) zukünftige Kundin an. Sie könne sich die Bären ansehen, natürlich ohne Kaufverpflichtung. Sie versprach, mich zurück zu rufen - was sie aber bis heute leider nicht tat. Ein bisschen enttäuscht bin ich schon, denn ich hatte viel Zeit und Arbeit in die Teddys investiert und mich bemüht, den gewünschten Termin einzuhalten und auf die Vorstellungen der Dame einzugehen. Einmal mehr habe ich dazu gelernt, wie man so einen kleinen Nebenerwerb besser führen sollte (oder eben: wie besser nicht). 


Nachdem ich nun drei Wochen gewartet habe, habe ich die drei kleinen Gesellen in meinen Etsy-Shop gestellt, in der Hoffnung, dass der eine oder andere auf diesem Weg ein neues Zuhause finden möge.


Noch ein Hinweis: Dieser Blog wird per Ende April geschlossen, d.h. er wird nicht mehr aktualisiert. Ich habe jedoch für meine Alba Bears bereits einen neuen Blog, und es würde mich sehr freuen, wenn meine Leser mir von jetzt an dort folgen würden. Danke!

I'm moving my blog!

Dear all!

I was busy during these weeks, trying to build up my new business and organising my little studio, which was in a state that used to be, to be honest, a nightmare...
But now things seem to get settled, and I'm busy again making new bears. A client ordered a teddy, and she might even buy another one, which is always very pleasing. Business is not so well presently, I think people still don't like to spend too much money for art or collectibles. But nonetheless I have so many new designs and ideas, and I also would like to make space in my studio, so I started to sale off some of my "older" creations. I think it's time they leave home and find a new place to live. :-) So please have a look at my shop, thanks.

I also will have to make a proper hat for this lovely teddy lady. She is one of my so-called "older" creations, and I set her apart for a client who wanted me to buy her but never called to pick her up. She had a matching felt hat before, but I was not happy with it and the material was not up to my quality standards. So I will have to sit down and make a new one which will certainly turn out better.

One last thing: I will be closing this blog soon. The reason is very simple: I used to have my own homepage for my Alba Bears, but I had nothing but troubles with the provider, and it got more and more complicated. I also was not happy that maintaining the site was so time-consuming. I'd rather spend my time with my family, or making bears, sewing children's clothing, working in the garden. So I decided to close my site. But then, I needed a proper blog, so that my customers can find me easily. And thus I set up a new blog named like my bears, AlbaBears. For a certain time, posts will be published on both blogs at the same time, but if you would like to follow my blog in the future, be sure to go to the NEW blog and follow me there. It was wonderful to have you as a follower here on "Bears & Scraps". There will be scraps of other crafts on my "AlbaBears" blog as well, and I would be deeply honoured and very glad to see you on my new blog soon.

New blog, and my first own blog design

Some of you may noticed my absence for weeks. Well, fact is: since Christmas I have been sick more or less all the time. But I also was busy with my second blog.

I am a very crafty person, and I love all things handmade, all kind of crafts. But since I'm a mom, I deeply got into designing and sewing children's clothing and accessories, toys, nice and useful stuff. Suddenly I realised how many things for babies and toddlers didn't meet my expectations at all. I didn't want to buy some of these things I didn't like, just because nothing else was available. So I started to make things of my own. Things made of wood and fabric, be it cotton or wool, natural fibers. I have a sketchbook full of ideas and designs, and I have a fabric stash ready to be used up. OK, the only problem is time. (I still have family duties and lot of housework to do, not to mention a garden...)

My label "Babelina & Button" was born. In December I attended at a local Christmas fair with a lot of my "products", shopping cats covers, wooden hangers, hair clip holders, pacifier bags, girl's dresses, soft toys etc. And even though people here are not so keen on handmade stuff, I could sell some things.

I set up a special blog with a shop for my new "boutique", and I even made my own blog design - the first ever! I am so amazed, my head sometimes is buzzing with all the new ideas that I have, and I wish the day would have more than just 24 hours...

Please understand that my teddies will have to wait a little bit in the meantime. I will not give them up, they are part of my life, but I will try to expand my business and find more buyer, thus being able to contribute to our family's income.

Ich poste nicht mehr so häufig, denn seit Weihnachten war ich mehr oder weniger immer krank. Aber ich war auch sehr beschäftigt, denn ich habe einen neuen Blog.


Ich war schon immer sehr kreativ und handwerklich begabt. Seit ich aber Mutter bin, habe ich begonnen, mich eingehend mit dem Entwerfen und Nähen von Kinderkleidern und Accessoires, Spielsachen etc. zu befassen. Eine neue Welt! Denn plötzlich musste ich realisieren, dass viele der angebotenen Artikel nicht meinen Vorstellungen entsprachen. So begann ich sie selber zu machen, aus Holz oder Stoff aus natürlichen Fasern. Es sollten Schöne und nützliche Sachen sein, die Bestand haben. Mittlerweile habe ich unzählige Entwürfe und Projekte. Ok, das einzige Problem ist die Zeit. (Ich habe ja auch noch Pflichten gegenüber meiner Familie, ganz zu schweigen vom Garten.)


So enstand mein Label "Babelina & Button". Im Dezember nahm ich an einem lokalen Weihnachtsmarkt teil, im Angebot Einkaufswagen-Polster, Schnuller-Taschen, Kleider, Kleiderbügel, Stofftiere und vieles mehr. Die Teddies müssen ein bisschen zurücktreten. Aber aufgeben werde ich das Bärenmachen nicht!


Für mein kleines Lädchen habe ich auch einen eigenen Blog mit integriertem Shop aufgesetzt und dazu sogar mein eigenes Blog-Design gemacht - mein erstes überhaupt! Ich würde mich freuen, wenn Ihr dort mal reinschaut.

Pouch for pacifiers and other small things

All women or mothers know the problem: pacifiers or other small things normally hide deep down on the bottom of big handbags or diaper bags. Recently I saw a pouch shaped like a triangular pyramid (a tetrahedron, to be precise), and I tried out to make one myself. I didn't have a pattern, but it was not difficult. Here is the result, and I produced many of them for my new label "Babelina & Button" and for my new Etsy shop. 

The most difficult part was the lining - I didn't want the seams to show, so the bag is really neatly lined. The short zipper is very handy, and a small strap helps opening and closing it.

With a metal clip on a longer strap the pouch can be fixed on the lining of a handbag, on a handbag handle, on the handle of a pram... 

And there are so many possibilities to combine lovely cotton prints with colourful zippers to create bunches of pouches for all kind of kids!

New Anime Creation - Yuuyami the Bat

Finally! I worked very long on this new Alba Bears creation. It didn't take me long to sew it, but it was a long process to develop the idea. But yesterday night Yuuyami was born!

I think bats are very fascinating animals, but most people misunderstand them. Of course, some look quite strange, but other are really cute.

Yuuyami is Japanese and means dusk, twilight. (No, I didn't see any of those Twilight Saga movies.) It's the time when bats awake. From today on, Yuuyami is available in my Etsy shop.

Endlich ist meine neueste Kreation fertig! Es hat ein bisschen gedauert, die Idee umzusetzen, doch gestern Abend wurde Yuuyami dann geboren!

Fledermäuse sind faszinierend, doch oft missverstanden. Klar sehen gewisse Vertreter der Gattung seltsam aus, doch einige sind sooo niedlich!

Yuuyami bedeutet Abenddämmerung auf Japanisch, und das ist die Zeit, zu der Fledermäuse ja bekanntlich aus ihrem Schlaf erwachen. Ab heute ist Yuuyami in meinem Etsy Shop.

Weihnachtsmarkt * Christmas Fair

Es ist wieder so weit, auch wenn es draussen noch sehr herbstlich ist und niemand dran denkt: Weihnachten kommt bald, zumindest für uns Kreative, denn bei uns laufen die Vorbereitungen ja oft schon früher an.
Nachdem ich letztes Jahr das erste Mal an einem kleinen Weihnachtsmarkt ausgestellt habe und seither an keiner Ausstellung mehr war, habe ich mich entschlossen, in meinem Heimatort Dielsdorf teilzunehmen. Erstens, weil ich mich natürlich diesem Ort immer noch verbunden fühle, zweitens wohne ich ja gleich in der Nähe, und drittens sind Weihnachtsmärkte einfach etwas Schönes. Ich mag die Stimmung, und an so einem Anlass auszustellen ist auch speziell. Besonders kleinere Märkte sind sehr reizvoll, da es oft sehr schöne handgemachte Sachen zu kaufen gibt.

Und es gibt noch ein interessantes Detail: das Wappen von Dielsdorf, wo ich ja geboren wurde und aufwuchs und wo meine Familie seit Jahrhunderten ansässig war, zeigt einen Bären. Jaaa, ob das wohl etwas zu bedeuten hat? Natürlich schauen meine Teddies nicht so grimmig drein!

Hier ist noch der Link zum Weihnachtsmarkt Dielsdorf, es würde mich natürlich freuen, wenn jemand vorbeischauen würde. Dielsdorf ist ja z.B. mit der Bahn von Zürich aus in etwa 20 Minuten zu erreichen.

Natürlich werde ich jetzt fleissig darauf hin arbeiten, viele Ideen sind ja schon über die Planungsphase hinaus und Prototypen sind erstellt. Es wird nebst meinen Teddies und selbst gemachten Karten viele Sachen für Kinder geben, handverzierte Kleiderbügel, handbemalte Baby-Bürsten, Haar-Clips und Haar-Clips-Halter, und vielleicht sind bis dann auch die ersten Kinderspielsachen bereit. Mal schauen, aber ich werde Euch sicher auf dem Laufenden halten!

Even though it's still autumn, most crafters already prepare for Christmas. So I decided to attend this year at the Christmas Fair in my native town Dielsdorf. Only last year I took part at such an event and I liked it very much. And Dielsdorf is near where I live, and somehow smaller fairs are more attractive than big ones. There are often a lot of handcrafted things to buy. And Dielsdorf is only a 20 minutes train ride away from Zurich. 
An interesting detail I'd like to add: the crest of Dielsdorf shows a bear. I think it just had to be that I became a teddy bear artist.

Success! * Freu!

In der ganzen Aufregung habe ich vergessen mitzuteilen, dass ich über meinen neuen Internet-Shop in den letzten zwei Wochen 4 Teddies verkauft habe. Falls Ihr auch mal reinschauen möchtet: http://www.etsy.com/shop/albabears

Eigentlich direkt über den Shop war es nur einer. Eine andere Kundin aus der Schweiz sah meinen Shop und kaufte gleich drei (!) Teddies für sich und ihre Freundin. So eine tolle Freundin! :-) Der andere Bär ging - in die USA! Ein richtiger Auswanderer. Ich war ganz aufgeregt. Natürlich ist mir klar, dass sich meine Alba Bears Kreationen nicht wie warme Semmeln verkaufen werden, das ist ja was für Liebhaber und Sammler, aber immerhin. Jetzt wo ich ja "nur" noch Hausfrau bin, ohne festen Lohn, kann ich das Geld natürlich schon brauchen.

Hier sind die Glücklichen, die ein neues Daheim gefunden haben: Moira (Teddy-Elfe), Crystal und Memory, beide mit Seidenstickereien an den Pfoten und Ohren.

Und hier ist noch Fleur, die jetzt im sonnigen Californien bei Kim lebt.

Etsy-Shop

Nach Feiertagen, Erkrankungen, Mutterpflichten, Familien, Stoffbestellungen etc. finde ich mal wieder Zeit für meinen Blog. Zuerst dachte ich ja, das hier könnte für mich so ein bisschen mein Fensterchen zur Welt werden, aber irgendwie muss man wohl, um sich gegen die Massen der andern Blogs abzuheben, täglich Post schreiben und viel Zeit investieren, Zeit, die dann letztlich zu Lasten meiner eigentlichen Tätigkeiten abhanden kommt.
Deshalb habe ich nun endlich den Schritt gewagt und meinen Shop auf Etsy eröffnet: www.etsy.com/albabears
Und wer hätte es gedacht, gleich in den ersten 10 Tagen habe ich 4 Bären verlauft. Einen direkt über Etsy, die andern drei über eine Kundin aus der Schweiz, die eigentlich meinen Link in einem anderen Forum gelesen hatte und aus reiner Neugierde dort gelandet ist. Ich bin total aufgeregt und natürlich überglücklich, dass meine Bären ein neues Zuhause gefunden haben. Es ist doch immer schön, wenn das Herzblut, das man in diese Sachen gesteckt hat, von andern Menschen wahrgenommen und geschätzt wird.
Ich bin nun so motoviert! Die Stoffbestellungen in Japan waren mehr als eine positive Überraschung, das war eine Offenbarung! Service und Qualität waren top, und ich habe gestern meinen ersten Entwurf für ein einfaches, ärmelloses Kimono-Kleidchen gemacht. Auch für die Kleider wird es auf Etsy einen Shop geben, das ist am einfachsten. Heute habe ich ein wenig am Logo gebastelt. Hier mal eine erste Version (die, so wie ich mich kenne, sicher noch x-mal geändert wird?).
